Galata - Museo del mare

Galata - Museo del mare is a maritime museum in Genoa that fills four floors with collections of navigation instruments, ship models, and seafaring objects. The rooms document different periods of seafaring and show how people worked and traded using ships.

The museum opened in 2004 on the site of a former shipyard complex that built vessels since the 16th century. This history connects the building directly to the city's long tradition of shipbuilding.

The exhibits show how the sea shaped Genoa's identity and the role ships played in people's daily lives. You see old navigation tools, trade routes, and the development of crafts that generations of residents helped build.

The museum offers audio guides in several languages, and the rooftop terrace gives views over the port. It works well for school groups, with special programs that support learning.

Visitors can explore an authentic World War II submarine from the inside, equipped with original instruments and equipment. The installation helps visitors understand how cramped the conditions were and what technology was used at that time.
