The Genio del Garraffo depicts a bearded man wearing a crown, holding a snake while sitting on a throne decorated with an eagle.
Pietro de Bonitate created this Carrara marble sculpture in 1483, commissioned by merchants from Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa, and Catalonia residing in Palermo.
The statue represents one of seven principal depictions of the Genius of Palermo, the ancient protective deity of the city and its inhabitants.
The sculpture stands within a 17th-century wall niche at Piazzetta del Garraffo, following its relocation from its original fountain setting.
Local residents refer to this statue as Palermu lu Grandi due to its larger size compared to another representation at Palazzo Pretorio.
