Modern Art Gallery Sant'Anna occupies a former Franciscan convent connected to the Church of Sant'Anna and the adjacent 15th-century Palazzo Bonet in central Palermo. The complex spans roughly 1,300 square meters (14,000 square feet) of exhibition space featuring paintings and sculptures from Italian and regional artists.
History
The museum was established in 1910, initially named after patron Empedocle Restivo to showcase works by regional artists. The building underwent multiple reconstructions following natural disasters, which shaped its current layout.
Culture
The space takes its name from the adjacent Sant'Anna Church and retains memories of its monastic roots in the building itself. You can sense this religious past through the architecture and how the rooms are arranged throughout the gallery.
Practical
The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from 09:30 to 18:30 and provides wheelchair access throughout. Guided tours are available to help you explore the exhibition spaces and understand the artworks on display.
