Museum of Textiles and Industry of Busto Arsizio, Textile and industry museum in Busto Arsizio, Italy
The Museum of Textiles and Industry of Busto Arsizio is an industry and technology museum housed inside a former cotton mill from the late 19th century, spread across three floors. It displays spinning machines, looms, and other textile production equipment that cover the full process from raw material to finished fabric.
The museum opened in 1997 inside the Carlo Ottolini Cotton Mill building, which was built in 1896 and stayed in operation until 1978. The building itself stands as a record of how northern Italy industrialized and how textile manufacturing shaped this part of the country for decades.
The second floor displays the schirpa, a traditional bridal dowry from the Alto Milanese region, with hand-embroidered garments and local lacework. These textiles show the role that handcraft played in family life across the region and how it was passed from one generation to the next.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, with hours that vary depending on the day of the week. It is worth checking the current schedule before you go, since morning and afternoon openings do not always follow the same pattern.
Among the exhibits are a spacesuit worn by astronaut Franco Malerba and a Formula 1 seat used by Mika Häkkinen. These objects show how far textile technology from this region reached, extending into fields like space exploration and motorsport.
