Bergantino nymphaeum, Archaeological site near Lake Albano in Castel Gandolfo, Italy.
The Bergantino Nymphaeum is an archaeological site near Lake Albano featuring a central circular pool about 17 meters across with remaining mosaic fragments on its surface. The complex consists of rooms carved into rock with water channels and decorative elements.
The site was built between 81 and 96 AD as part of Emperor Domitian's grand villa complex in the Alban Hills. It was one of the most impressive structures of this imperial summer residence.
The structure shows Roman craftsmanship with multiple chambers carved from a former quarry and water features designed for imperial ceremonies. Visitors can still see traces of these elaborate water systems that shaped daily life at the imperial residence.
The site is located at Via dei Pescatori and remains temporarily closed to visitors, but recovered objects are displayed in the Antiquarium of Villa Barberini. Those interested in the collection should check opening times in advance.
The circular grotto served two purposes: as bathing facilities for the emperor and later as boat storage for imperial water celebrations on the lake. This dual use shows how Romans adapted such structures for different needs.
