Santa Maria della Stella

Santa Maria della Stella is a baroque church in Albano Laziale featuring characteristic architectural elements of this style throughout its structure. The main altar is distinguished by polychrome marble decorations that enhance the overall design of the interior.

The church was consecrated in 1565 when nobles Fabrizio and Cristoforo Savelli replaced a hermitage with the current structure. The construction was tied to the establishment of a Carmelite monastery that strengthened the spiritual community at the site.

The church takes its name from a star depicted on the Virgin Mary's mantle in the painting behind the main altar. This detail forms a focal point that visitors notice when entering the worship space.

The building stands near the municipal cemetery, which is accessible through a classical portal featuring granite columns and white marble decorations. Visitors should note this elegant entryway that marks the cemetery's access point.

In 1867, Queen Maria Teresa Isabella of Habsburg-Lorraine from the Two Sicilies was buried in the church after dying from cholera. Her burial place makes this church a significant location in Neapolitan royal history.
