Oratorio dei Crociferi

The Oratorio dei Crociferi is a former convent building across from the Gesuiti church, decorated with artwork from religious commissions. Eight large canvas paintings cover the walls, depicting scenes from the order's history and works.

The building began in the 12th century as part of a convent founded by the Crociferi order. Over time, the complex became an important center for providing aid and shelter in the lagoon.

The name comes from the Crociferi order, which dedicated itself to helping soldiers and pilgrims in need. The large wall paintings show the daily works and missions of this religious brotherhood in vivid scenes.

Entry requires advance reservations, as the space is only open at specific times each week. It helps to book your visit early, especially if you want to come on a weekend.

The wooden ceiling displays an elaborate painting of the Assumption of the Virgin surrounded by musical angels in its original 15th-century form. This ceiling work remains remarkably well preserved from that distant era.
