Palazzo delle Poste, Post office headquarters in Castellamare district, Palermo, Italy
Palazzo delle Poste is a postal administration building in the Castellamare district featuring a front of ten tall columns clad in gray marble. Inside, the structure showcases refined materials and architectural details that reflect rationalist design principles of the early 20th century.
Architect Angiolo Mazzoni designed the building starting in 1926 following rationalist principles that were fashionable at the time. The structure was completed and opened to the public in 1934 as a showcase of modern administrative architecture.
The conference room displays five murals by Futurist artist Benedetta Cappa showing communications across land, sea, air, telegraph, and radio. These paintings in tempera and encaustic celebrate the role of modern connection in everyday life.
The building is open to the public and features clear entry points and distinctive architectural landmarks like the columned front. Visitors should be aware that it remains an active administrative center, so certain areas may have limited access.
Inside the building sits an elliptical staircase roughly 9 meters across, crafted from red and black marble with copper-clad doors. This intricate spiral represents the level of craftsmanship invested in every interior detail.
