Palazzo d'Afflitto, 15th-century palace in San Giuseppe district, Naples, Italy
Palazzo d'Afflitto is a 15th-century palace in the San Giuseppe district of Naples featuring multiple architectural elements from different reconstruction periods. The building houses a chapel on its third floor that once served as a church for the Real Monte Manso di Scala foundation, with a smaller chapel located beneath it.
The palace was originally owned by the noble d'Afflitto family before being acquired in 1654 by the Real Monte Manso di Scala foundation to support seminary studies. The chapel on the third floor was later constructed in 1747 to serve the building's expanding role as a spiritual institution.
The chapel inside holds religious artworks that visitors encounter while moving through the rooms. This blend of palace structure and church furnishings creates a space where secular and sacred purposes existed side by side.
The palace sits on Via Nilo in the San Giuseppe neighborhood and is easily reached from nearby historical monuments. Its location makes it a convenient stop when exploring older parts of Naples.
The chapel holds an altar featuring statues of Saints Ignatius of Loyola and Francis Xavier alongside a canvas of the Madonna and child painted by Francesco de Mura. These works reveal the religious importance the foundation placed on reshaping the building's purpose.
