Spire of San Domenico Maggiore, Baroque obelisk in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, Naples, Italy.
The Spire of San Domenico Maggiore is a Baroque obelisk built from limestone with multiple decorated tiers rising from a square base to a bronze statue of Saint Dominic at the top. Each level displays elaborate carved ornaments that reflect the artistic style of its period.
Construction started in 1656 following a severe plague outbreak and finished in 1737 under architect Domenico Antonio Vaccaro. The structure was built as a response to the epidemic and served as a symbol of the city's hope for recovery.
The monument occupies a square where people have gathered for prayer across centuries, and the church beside it remains an active center of worship for locals. The space reflects how faith continues to shape the rhythm of the neighborhood.
The obelisk sits in the center of the square and works as an easy landmark when walking through the historic Spaccanapoli district. The plaza is freely accessible and surrounded by churches, cafes, and small shops where you can pause and rest.
This is one of three plague columns in Naples, and each tier displays different religious symbols and artistic details that visitors often miss when looking at it from ground level. The carved designs on every level were carefully planned to represent different aspects of faith and hope.
