Ponte della Becca, Iron bridge at Linarolo and Mezzanino, Italy
Ponte della Becca is an iron bridge that stretches 1081 meters, connecting the municipalities of Linarolo and Mezzanino. It crosses the confluence where the Ticino and Po rivers meet.
Construction began in 1910 and finished in 1912, creating a vital crossing over the rivers. The structure suffered damage from bombing raids in 1944 during World War II and was rebuilt by Società Nazionale Officine di Savigliano in 1950.
The bridge grew out of the need to move grapes from Oltrepò Pavese to Pavia and the surrounding region. Before this, people relied on ferries and floating bridges to cross the rivers.
The bridge carries traffic on the SS617 road linking Broni and Pavia. This is a main transport route for the surrounding communities, so visiting outside rush hours makes for a more peaceful experience.
A river tourism complex was developed in the 1990s at the Pavia end of the structure. Water-based activities remain limited due to the area's frequent flooding problems.
