Santuario dell'Icona Passatora

The Santuario dell'Icona Passatora is a Romanesque shrine located on a mountain plateau in the Rieti province. The building houses a small tabernacle and features walls completely covered with religious frescoes.

The shrine was built around 1480 to house a small religious tabernacle that dated back to the early 14th century. The frescoes on the walls were created during the same period and show the artistic skill of that time.

The frescoes covering the interior walls show religious scenes from the 15th century that reflect the spiritual life of people at that time. These painted images tell stories of faith and devotion that visitors can still see and appreciate today.

The site is best reached on foot and sits on elevated ground with wide views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors should bring appropriate footwear and weather protection, as the location can be windy and exposed.

The sandstone facade displays a knotted symbol that held deeper meaning for the builders' faith and represented religious concepts. This detail is less known today than other features of the building, but it reveals much about the religious thinking of the time.
