Amatrice, Mountain commune in Province of Rieti, Italy
Amatrice is a mountain commune in the Province of Rieti standing at roughly 955 meters above sea level in central Italy. The settlement spreads across several hillsides near the borders with Umbria, Marche and Abruzzo.
People lived in this area since prehistoric times as Roman tombs and building remains confirm. During the Middle Ages the settlement grew as a stopping point on trade routes between Lazio and eastern regions.
Local cuisine reflects shepherding traditions still visible in small cheese shops and butcher counters today. Visitors find simple inns along the main roads where people serve traditional pasta dishes and sharp sheep cheese from nearby pastures.
The surrounding forests and mountain paths are most comfortable to walk during spring and autumn when temperatures are milder. Sturdy shoes help on uneven trails and in steeper sections.
A local park displays miniature models of monuments and animals from the Gran Sasso area. The small figures show ibex, wolves and other species living in higher elevations.
