Basilica Santuario della Beata Vergine delle Grazie, Minor basilica and shrine in Udine, Italy.
The Basilica Santuario della Beata Vergine delle Grazie is a minor basilica and shrine in the city of Udine, with a classical facade framed by four columns at its entrance. Inside, the space is organized around several altars and religious works arranged along the nave and side chapels.
The church was founded in 1495 on a site that previously held an older building dedicated to different saints. That transition marked the beginning of the sanctuary's role as a place of pilgrimage for the region.
The walls inside hold paintings connected to the circle of Tintoretto, displayed in the same sacred setting for which they were made. The combination of artwork and architecture gives the interior a coherent visual character that visitors can take in as they walk through.
The sanctuary is open daily and still used for regular worship, so religious services may be taking place when you arrive. Visiting outside of main service times gives more freedom to move through the interior at your own pace.
The sanctuary holds a Byzantine icon from the 14th century that is said to have come from an Ottoman sultan's court before reaching Udine. Its long reputation for healing has made it the focus of pilgrimages that continue to this day.
