Serraglio, Medieval fortification in Villafranca di Verona, Italy.
The Serraglio is a medieval fortification system that extends across multiple kilometers, linking several castles and fortified settlements in the region. Remaining sections of walls and structures are scattered along the landscape between various locations.
The Scala family initiated the project in the late 13th century in response to conflicts with neighboring powers. The system was progressively expanded and completed over several decades as construction continued.
The fortification system reflects how the ruling family displayed control over the territory through strategic placement of walls and settlements. It remains part of the local landscape today, visible through standing ruins and stone remnants.
The best views and remains of the wall can be seen from Provincial Road 24, which partly follows the original fortification route. Comfortable shoes are useful since there are several walking opportunities along the system.
The system served not only as military defense but was later adapted to control trade routes passing through the area. This dual function made it an important economic tool for managing commerce in the region.
