Ossario di Custoza, Military ossuary and museum in Custoza, Italy
The Ossario di Custoza is an octagonal memorial tower on Belvedere Hill in Custoza, northern Italy, divided into four main sides and four secondary ones, topped by an obelisk. Rising about 130 feet (40 meters), it combines a museum with a memorial site for soldiers who fell in different conflicts.
The memorial was built following a national competition held in 1877 and opened in 1879 to honor those who fell in the battles of 1848 and 1866. Both engagements near Custoza were major events during the period of Italian unification.
A chapel with an altar sits inside the tower, serving as a place of remembrance for soldiers from both sides of the battles. The crypt below holds the remains of those who fell during the fighting at Custoza.
Guided tours are available on weekends and offer a deeper understanding of the site's story. The exterior and surrounding grounds can be visited at any time, while the interior has set opening hours.
The upper loggia, lined with a balustrade, offers one of the widest views in the region, taking in the Adige Valley and the Po Plain in a single look. A building next to the tower houses multimedia displays that add context to what you see inside.
