Ossario di Custoza, Military ossuary and museum in Custoza, Italy
Ossario di Custoza is an octagonal memorial tower with four main sides and four secondary ones, topped by an obelisk on Belvedere Hill. The structure rises roughly 40 meters high and serves as a resting place for fallen soldiers from multiple conflict periods.
The memorial was designed through a national competition in 1877 and opened in 1879 to house the fallen from the 1848 and 1866 battles. Its construction followed major military engagements that shaped the region's history.
A chapel with an altar sits within the tower as a place for reflection and remembrance. Below it, the crypt holds remains from soldiers who fought on both sides of the conflicts.
Guided tours are available on weekends, giving you a fuller understanding of the site, though you can explore the exterior and surroundings anytime. Children under 5 and visitors with disabilities receive free entry, while discounted rates apply for ages 6 to 18.
The upper level features a balustraded loggia that opens up to sweeping views across the landscape, stretching from the Adige Valley to the Po Plain. An adjacent building complements the space with multimedia displays that add deeper context to your visit.
