Madonna di Caravaggio, Religious sanctuary on Monte Orsena in Rapallo, Italy
The Madonna di Caravaggio sanctuary stands at 615 meters above sea level, offering extensive views across the Gulf of Tigullio and the Ligurian coastline.
Following the placement of a cross in 1645, the first chapel was constructed and received a painting of the Madonna from local residents in the late 17th century.
The sanctuary functions as a central point for religious ceremonies and annual pilgrimages, connecting the communities of Santa Maria del Campo and surrounding areas.
Visitors can reach the sanctuary through a forest path starting from either Santa Maria del Campo or the ancient church of Ruta in Rapallo.
The sanctuary features a helicopter landing platform and wooden tables for visitors who complete the 16-kilometer circular hiking trail to reach this elevated location.
