Nostra Signora del Suffragio

Nostra Signora del Suffragio is a baroque church in Recco built with a single nave whose walls and ceiling overflow with intricate stucco work. The decorations tell biblical stories and depict the Assumption of Mary using richly modeled surfaces.

Construction of this church began in the mid-18th century along the road connecting Recco to the nearby town of Uscio. It replaced an older oratory that had been dedicated to Saint Martin.

The Madonna with Child statue at the heart of this place comes from Byzantine origins and wears decorative garments added centuries ago. These pieces reflect how the local community continuously honored and enriched their sanctuary over time.

The church sits on Piazzetta Nostra Signora del Suffragio, where its bell tower rises above the surrounding buildings of Recco. The small square around it makes it easy to approach and provides space to view the exterior.

The interior walls feature polychrome stucco art from 1771 that includes depictions of the Council of Nicaea, a subject rarely seen in churches. These works showcase the exceptional craftsmanship invested in the decorative program.
