Teatro Luigi Mercantini

The Teatro Luigi Mercantini sits inside the Palazzo del Podestà and features three tiers of boxes arranged in a U-shape, accommodating 253 spectators in its main hall. The space is designed with careful attention to sight lines and acoustic considerations for performances.

The building was designed by architect Pietro Maggi in 1790 and opened as Teatro del Leone in 1824. It was renamed in 1894 to honor poet Luigi Mercantini and his contributions to Italian literature.

The ceiling displays floral decorations and portraits of famous composers and writers such as Rossini, Verdi, Alfieri, Bellini, Goldoni, and Metastasio. These images reflect the local appreciation for the musicians and authors who shaped Italian theater.

The theatre is located at Piazza XX Settembre 1 in central Ripatransone and is straightforward to reach on foot. Following major renovations in 2012, the venue now provides improved accessibility for visitors with mobility challenges.

The theatre preserves a curtain painted in 1811 by Giuseppe Ruffini depicting Virginia, a local heroine who died resisting Spanish soldiers. Her story remains part of the town's identity and is celebrated through this artwork.
