Fortezza medievale, Military fortress in Acquaviva Picena, Italy
The Fortezza medievale is a quadrilateral fortress with four corner towers, including a central cylindrical tower rising 22 meters (72 feet). The defensive walls were built with specific techniques to resist cannon fire.
The Acquaviva family constructed the fortress around 1300 to protect their lands and the surrounding settlement. After forces from Fermo destroyed it, architect Baccio Pontelli rebuilt and reinforced it in 1474.
The fortress houses a museum that displays artifacts and explains how military construction and defense methods changed over time. Visitors can see objects that show what life was like for soldiers living inside these walls.
You can visit the fortress during daylight hours, and guided tours provide more detailed information about its layout and features. Bring comfortable shoes since the walkways can be uneven and climbing the towers requires some effort.
The fortress contains hidden underground passages within its thick walls that allowed soldiers to move secretly between defensive positions during siege attacks. These concealed tunnels reveal how strategically the defenders planned their operations.
