Santa Maria della Marina cathedral, church building in San Benedetto del Tronto, Italy
Santa Maria della Marina cathedral is a church building in San Benedetto del Tronto with a simple, squared facade that extends upward and houses a life-size statue of the Virgin Mary carved in Carrara marble. Inside, a spacious interior spans three naves and features a large apse fresco covering about 400 square meters depicting maritime scenes and local saints.
The original church was built in the mid-1600s on the shore and was dedicated to maritime memory of the victory of Lepanto. The present building began in 1847 and was blessed in 1908, then consecrated in 1973 and elevated to cathedral status in 1986 when the city became a diocesan seat.
The cathedral serves as a focal point for fishers and people connected to the sea, as it reflects their stories and traditions. The celebration of Madonna della Marina on July 2nd demonstrates this connection through processions on the water and blessing ceremonies that unite the community.
You reach the cathedral by climbing a short marble staircase to the plaza in Piazza Luciano Nardone in the city center. The interior is open and accessible, offering space for quiet reflection, particularly in the morning when fewer visitors are present.
The organ inside was taken from the Basilica of Loreto and has more than 3,500 pipes, making it a rare instrument with a storied past. It ranks among the region's most important organs and contributes its full sound to services.
