San Benedetto del Tronto, Coastal commune in Marche, Italy
San Benedetto del Tronto is a coastal commune in Ascoli Piceno province on the Adriatic coast, rising from sea level to 282 meters (925 feet) elevation. The town area lies between inland hills and a long sandy beach accompanied by a palm-lined promenade.
The first written record appears in 998, while archaeological finds point to the ancient Roman settlement Alba Picena. Over the centuries the place grew from a small fishing village into one of the main Adriatic ports.
The name honors Benedict of Nursia, whose veneration has shaped the town since medieval times and remains visible in the townscape. Along the seafront promenade you notice the connection to the sea through the many small cafés and restaurants serving fresh fish daily.
The promenade runs several kilometers along the coast and suits walks in any season. In the harbor area you see fishing boats returning in the morning and can buy fresh fish directly at the quay.
Over 8,000 palm trees spread throughout the town and along the Riviera delle Palme, giving the coast an almost tropical appearance. This planting began in the 19th century and now makes the place instantly recognizable along the Adriatic.
