Torre dei Gualtieri in San Benedetto del Tronto

The Torre dei Gualtieri is a hexagonal brick tower in Paese Alto standing 19 meters tall with thick defensive walls, narrow windows, and a clock facing east. Its sturdy construction demonstrates the building style typical of medieval fortifications from this period.

Bishops of Fermo authorized the Gualtieri family to build this defensive tower in 1145 as part of a fortified complex overlooking the coast. It was one element of a larger medieval defensive system protecting the area.

The tower serves as an exhibition space and cultural venue for the local community today. Its role in hosting events and gatherings gives it a living presence in the neighborhood.

Access to the tower is through the ground-level entrance at Piazza Sacconi, making it easy to reach. The site sits in the historic Paese Alto quarter, which is walkable and centrally located.

The tower has double buttresses and walls 1.7 meters thick, showing how advanced medieval military engineering was at the time. These features were built to protect the structure and keep it standing for centuries.
