Teatro Serpente Aureo

Teatro Serpente Aureo is a theatre in Offida's old town that features a horseshoe-shaped auditorium with three tiers of boxes. The interior accommodates 300 to 500 spectators and follows the classical Italian theatre layout with seating arranged at different levels.

The theatre was constructed in 1771 and replaced an earlier stage that existed in the town hall council chamber. It underwent major renovation in 1862 by architect Pietro Maggi, who gave it its current appearance.

The ceiling displays frescoes depicting Apollo and the Muses, reflecting classical Italian theatrical traditions with their graceful figures. Surrounding these central images are eight medallions showing portraits of important opera and drama composers from history.

The theatre sits beneath the town hall portico at Largo della Musica 6, with its entrance opening into a foyer decorated by four Muse statues. Its central location in the old town makes it easy to reach and provides convenient access to nearby historic sites.

The theatre's name comes from a local legend about a golden snake, which is depicted on an old stage curtain still inside the building. This mythical symbol from the town's past remains a quiet reminder of Offida's folkloric roots.
