Torre Bissara

Torre Bissara, Gothic tower in Piazza dei Signori, Vicenza, Italy

Torre Bissara is a Gothic tower standing in Piazza dei Signori next to the Palladian Basilica, dominating the central square of Vicenza. It features a clock with a cobalt blue dial showing moon phases and is topped with a Roman-era statue of Athena.

The tower was built in 1174 by the Bissari family and was acquired by the municipality of Vicenza between 1211 and 1229 for civic purposes. Its transition from private to public ownership marked its role in the city's governance.

The tower displays a marble relief of the Lion of Saint Mark, connecting the square to Venetian rule and identity. This symbol remains visible in the stonework and grounds around the base, marking the city's historical ties.

The tower is best viewed from the central plaza, where you can see all its sides and the intricate Gothic details. Standing in the middle of the square gives you the clearest view of the clock and its moon phase dial.

A special melody composed by Maestro Valtinoni plays from the tower at precise times: 11:53 in the morning and 17:53 in the evening. This hidden musical touch rewards visitors who happen to be in the square at these specific moments.
