The Spanish crown purchased the Monaldeschi family palace in 1654 for 22,000 Roman scudi to establish a permanent diplomatic residence near the Vatican.
The palace contains a collection of 17th-century Gobelin tapestries and two marble busts created by Gianlorenzo Bernini depicting contrasting spiritual states.
The building continues to function as the Embassy of Spain to the Holy See, maintaining diplomatic relations between Spain and the Vatican since 1647.
The palace features a grand ballroom that previously contained a wooden theater where the first performance of Vittorio Alfieri's Antigone took place in 1782.
