Sanctuary of Madonna del Carmine, Accadia

The Sanctuary of Madonna del Carmine stands at 1,039 meters above sea level in the Daunian Mountains of Apulia, featuring a marble relief of Madonna with child.

In 1694, Giuseppe Recco, Duke of Accadia, funded the construction of the chapel and donated a marble bas-relief depicting the Madonna and child.

The sanctuary hosts religious celebrations including a pilgrimage from Accadia on the first Sunday of May and a torchlight procession on July 16.

Every five years, the statue of Madonna descends from Mount Crispignano to Accadia during a ceremonial procession that draws numerous participants.

According to local tradition, between 1200 and 1300, the Madonna del Carmine appeared in a rock crevice to a 12-year-old shepherd from Panni.
