Pinacoteca Nazionale, National art museum in Ferrara, Italy
The Pinacoteca Nazionale is a national art museum in Ferrara, housed on the main floor of Palazzo dei Diamanti. The collection spans paintings from the 13th to the 19th century, with a strong focus on the Ferrarese school and works by artists such as Cosmè Tura, Garofalo, Dosso Dossi, and Guercino.
The museum was founded in 1836 as Ferrara's first public painting collection, created to protect artworks from local churches and palaces from being dispersed. In 1958 it passed from the city to the Italian state, becoming an officially national institution.
The Pinacoteca Nazionale sits inside Palazzo dei Diamanti, a building named after its outer walls covered in small diamond-shaped marble stones. This facade makes the building one of the most recognizable sights in Ferrara, drawing visitors in even before they step inside to see the paintings.
The museum sits on Corso Ercole I d'Este and can be reached on foot from the Castello Estense in just a few minutes. Monday is generally the closing day, and visiting in the morning tends to give more room to move through the rooms at a comfortable pace.
Two paintings in the collection, the Muse Erato and the Muse Urania, once decorated the Studiolo di Belfiore, a private study room created by the Este dukes that no longer exists. The room itself has disappeared, making these panels the only surviving traces of its decoration.
