Chiesa di San Bartolomeo

The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo is a neoclassical church in Castenedolo featuring a vaulted interior with symmetrical columns and several altars. The space is decorated with religious paintings displayed on the walls and above the altars.

The original building was destroyed by an earthquake in 1799, after which architect Carlo Donegani designed a replacement. Construction of the new building began in 1803 and followed neoclassical principles.

The painting by Francesco Hayez depicting the martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew shapes the religious atmosphere inside. You can see religious artworks throughout that tell stories of saints and faith.

The church is located in the center of Castenedolo and easy to reach. Visitors should wear modest clothing and can explore the interior at their own pace to see the altars and artworks.

The second altar on the right holds a 1545 altarpiece by Moretto showing Christ with Saints Bartholomew and Rocco. This Renaissance work reveals the long artistic history of the site before the neoclassical rebuild.
