Parco delle Cave, Urban park in southeast Brescia, Italy
Parco delle Cave is a 69-hectare urban park with three artificial lakes - Bose, Canneto, and Gerolotto - surrounded by woodland and vegetation. Walking paths connect these water areas and wind through the entire space.
The area was originally farmland before being converted into quarries from the 1960s onward, with over 60 extraction sites operating simultaneously. The municipality began restoration efforts in 2012 to transform the exhausted landscape.
Local groups organize sports events and environmental programs that shape how residents use the park today. These activities show the strong connection between the community and this reclaimed landscape.
The park is open 24 hours and easily reached via metro stations San Polino or Sant'Eufemia-Buffalora. Parking areas near each lake make it convenient to visit by car.
The park grows from former quarry sites and demonstrates how exhausted mining landscapes can become thriving public spaces. This recovery project now serves as a model for similar restoration efforts across Europe.
