Santissimo Crocifisso

The Santissimo Crocifisso is a neoclassical shrine in Longiano featuring a stone facade with refined decorative details and a single-nave Latin cross interior. The space is organized to focus attention on the wooden crucifix that serves as its primary religious object.

The shrine was founded in 1236 as Chiesa della Santissima Annunciata when canon Erasmo Campanacci built it on former marshland outside the city walls. In 1399, European pilgrims returning from Rome brought a wooden crucifix that became the sanctuary's central religious focus.

The shrine served pilgrims across generations who came to venerate the wooden crucifix housed within its walls. Visitors experienced a place of personal devotion where processions and religious ceremonies connected the community to its faith.
