Fondazione Tito Balestra, Museum of modern art in Longiano, Italy
The Fondazione Tito Balestra is a museum of modern art housed inside the Malatestiano Castle in the hilltop town of Longiano. Inside the old stone walls, visitors find a large collection of twentieth-century paintings, drawings, and sculptures arranged across quiet rooms and a courtyard.
Tito Balestra was born in Longiano in 1923 and began building his collection after the Second World War while living in Rome. The foundation was officially created in 1982 to keep the collection together, and it has since grown into a recognized regional heritage institution.
The collection reflects the friendships Tito Balestra formed with painters and writers after moving to Rome, and today visitors can sense that personal network in the many recognizable names on the walls. Local residents use the adjoining library and bookshop during the same opening hours, turning an art visit into a quiet everyday stop in the village.
Wheelchair users can enter via a ramp and use a lift to reach the upper floor, while handrails make the stairways easier for everyone. Public buses connect Longiano with Cesena, Rimini, and Savignano, and the Adriatic coast is only a short drive away for a combined day trip.
A virtual tour allows people to see parts of the castle that are normally closed to the public. Visitors who use it can explore rooms they would otherwise miss, making the whole building feel more open than it appears from the entrance.
