Punta Imperatore Lighthouse, Maritime lighthouse at Punta Imperatore, Forio, Italy
Punta Imperatore Lighthouse is a white tower on a rocky headland near Forio, with a cylindrical structure topped by a grey metallic dome. A two-story keeper's residence sits adjacent to the tower, forming a compact complex built into the coastal landscape.
The first lighthouse structure was built in 1883 and began operating in 1884 to guide ships through the Tyrrhenian Sea near Naples. It was constructed during a period of increased maritime traffic along the coast.
Lucia Capuano made history at the lighthouse when she took over as keeper after her husband's death in service on November 25, 1937.
The lighthouse can be reached by walking along the coastal headland and offers views from its elevated position. Access is straightforward, though you should check current conditions before visiting to confirm it is open to the public.
The structure was built using traditional nineteenth-century masonry methods that are still visible in its construction today. This crafted approach to building has kept the facility standing strong for more than a century.
