Yonago, Administrative city in Tottori Prefecture, Japan
Yonago is an administrative city in Tottori Prefecture that spreads across the flat delta formed by the Hino River where it meets the Sea of Japan and the shores of Lake Nakaumi. The urban area sits between coastal waters and inland mountains, serving as a commercial and transport hub in the western part of the prefecture.
A castle was built here in 1601 to secure control over trade routes and fishing rights in the surrounding waters. This fortification transformed the former fishing village into a strategic point that later grew into the modern administrative center.
The name Yonago combines two kanji characters, with 米 representing rice and 子 representing child, reflecting the agricultural foundation of the region.
Miho-Yonago Airport lies northwest of the city and connects it to larger Japanese cities. Several railway lines run through the city center and provide access to other regions along the Sea of Japan coast.
At the edge of the city stands a tomb that according to tradition is believed to be the resting place of the goddess Izanami. This site connects the region to some of the oldest Japanese myths about the creation of the islands.
