Oze National Park, National park in Gunma Prefecture, Japan
Oze National Park spans four prefectures with expansive marshlands, alpine vegetation, and forested slopes rising to about 1,400 meters elevation. Elevated wooden boardwalks crisscross the wetland areas, connecting trailheads and allowing visitors to move safely through the boggy terrain.
The area became a national park in 2007, marking Japan's first new protected designation since the Kushiro wetlands received status in 1987. This delayed recognition reflects how long it took for the region to gain official protection at the national level.
Local communities have long valued the marshlands as part of their landscape heritage. The place holds meaning for visitors who seek to experience the natural environment and seasonal rhythms of the mountains.
Sturdy footwear and waterproof clothing are recommended since the marshlands remain wet and conditions can change quickly throughout the day. The best time to visit is from May through October when trails are accessible and the landscape is lush with flowering plants.
White skunk cabbage blooms blanket the marshlands in late May before vanishing. Yellow alpine lilies take their place in summer, then red grasses emerge in autumn, creating a shifting palette of color throughout the seasons.
