Hōun-ji

Hōun-ji, Buddhist temple in Kamigōri, Japan

Hōun-ji is a Buddhist temple in Kamigori featuring traditional wooden buildings with sloping roofs built according to established Japanese architectural styles. The complex includes gardens laid out according to classical design principles, creating the full picture of a functioning Zen monastery.

The temple was founded during the Muromachi period under the sponsorship of the Akamatsu clan, a samurai family with regional authority. This establishment made the location one of the important Zen monasteries in the province.

The temple functions today as an active Zen center where visitors can observe meditation practices and see how traditional Buddhist teachings shape daily life on the grounds. The layout and gardens are designed to support this spiritual focus, creating a space that feels intentional and purposeful.

The temple is reachable by local bus service from Kamigori station and welcomes visitors who want to explore the grounds. It is best to check ahead about visiting hours and any special conditions before making the trip.

The monk Sesson Yūbai deliberately chose this location for its geographic advantages and used it as one of several monastic centers he established in Harima region. This meant the temple grew as part of a network of related institutions that shaped Buddhist presence in the area.
