Shirahata Castle

Shirahata Castle, Medieval mountain castle in Kamigori, Japan.

Shirahata Castle is a medieval mountain fortress in Kamigori at around 440 meters elevation that overlooked a river and an important trade route. The remains show the basic layout with earthworks, residential towers, and defensive walls typical of Japanese mountain castles of that era.

The Akamatsu family built this fortress around 1333 and made it their main stronghold during a turbulent time in Japan. It was eventually abandoned in 1538 as political alliances shifted and the region changed hands.

The ruins show how people lived on this mountainside during medieval times, with separate areas for homes and defense. The layout reflects how important this location was for the local population and the ruling family.

Access to the site is via a marked walking trail from a nearby train station, and the terrain is hilly with a moderate uphill walk. Comfortable hiking shoes and time to explore are worthwhile, as the location has no on-site facilities or services.

The location was the site of a famous military confrontation in the 14th century that demonstrated the fortress's strength. This episode remains part of local stories today and made the place a notable point in regional history.
