Shirahata Castle, Medieval mountain castle in Kamigori, Japan.
The castle stands at 440 meters elevation on Mount Shirohata, overseeing both the Chikusagawa River and the San'yōdō highway connecting Kyoto to western Japan.
The Akamatsu clan constructed this fortification around 1333, making it their primary stronghold during the Kamakura period until its abandonment in 1538.
The castle remains demonstrate medieval Japanese military architecture through its strategic positioning and structural elements, including defensive enclosures and residential areas.
Visitors can reach the castle site by taking a 20-minute walk from the Chizu Express Konohara-Enshin Station through marked mountain paths.
The fortress withstood a 50-day siege by Nitta Yoshisada in 1336, proving its effectiveness as a military installation during Japan's feudal conflicts.
