Kobe Shinwa University, Universität in Japan
Kobe Shinwa University is a private institution in Kobe's Kita ward that became coeducational in early 2023 after serving students for over a century. The campus combines original schoolhouses built in simple wood and brick style with newer teaching facilities, and offers programs in literature, psychology, education, and sports science.
The school started in 1887 as Shinwa Girls' School near Zenshoji Temple and became a high school in 1908 under the motto 'Faithfulness, Perseverance, and Clemency.' University-level education began in 1966 as Shinwa Women's University, and the institution shifted to coeducation in 2023 while taking its current name.
The university's name reflects its founder Haruko Tomokuni and the educational philosophy expressed in the motto 'Faithfulness, Perseverance, and Clemency.' The institution represents how educational opportunities have evolved over more than a century, and visitors can observe students from diverse backgrounds studying and working together on campus.
The campus is about 10 minutes on foot from Suzurandai Station or just minutes by bus, making it easy to reach. International students can access a dormitory within walking distance, and the university provides dedicated support services to help students settle in and navigate campus life comfortably.
The founder Haruko Tomokuni received the Medal with Blue Ribbon in 1916 and the Orders of the Sacred Treasure in 1924 for her contributions to women's education. Notable alumna actress and model Norika Fujiwara studied at both the high school and university levels, demonstrating the institution's role in launching careers beyond academia.
