Kabe Station, railway station in Hiroshima, Hiroshima prefecture, Japan
Kabe Station is an above-ground railway station operated by JR West in Asakita-ku, a northern district of Hiroshima. The station sits at the end of the Kabe Line and has ground-level platforms with basic passenger facilities including ticket machines and waiting areas.
Kabe Station opened in 1936 as the terminus of a line built to connect the mountainous northern edge of the Hiroshima area with the city center. Over the following decades, it served as the main gateway for residents of the surrounding villages traveling toward the city.
Kabe Station is the northern terminus of the JR West Kabe Line, and many visitors use it as a starting point for walks into the hills around Asakita-ku. On weekends, the area around the exit fills with hikers preparing for trails that lead into the surrounding countryside.
As a terminus, the station is easy to navigate since all departing trains leave from the same end of the line. The station is busiest on weekday mornings and late afternoons, when commuters and students travel back and forth.
Although the station sits at the edge of the city, the Kabe Line branches directly off the Sanyo Main Line, which means this quiet endpoint connects to one of Japan's most important rail corridors. The name Kabe refers to the old local place name that was already in use in the area long before the railway arrived.
