Kagetsu-en Velodrome, Sportstätte in Japan
The Kagetsu-en Velodrome is a cycling sports venue in Yokohama, Japan, built specifically for keirin racing on a banked oval track. The facility has simple spectator stands arranged around the track, a smooth racing surface, and food vendor areas spread across the grounds.
The velodrome opened in the postwar period, when the Japanese government introduced keirin racing as a regulated sport with legal betting to help rebuild local economies. It has hosted generations of fans and riders since then, becoming a steady part of Yokohama's sporting life.
Keirin racing was developed in Japan as a regulated form of competitive cycling with a long tradition in working-class communities. On race days, spectators of all ages gather along the track, buy food from vendors, and cheer loudly for their favorite riders.
The venue is a short walk from Kagetsuen-Mae station and easy to reach from central Yokohama by train. Arriving early on race days is a good idea if you want a comfortable spot in the stands.
Keirin was exported from Japan and became an Olympic discipline at the 2000 Sydney Games, but the version raced here follows different rules from the Olympic format. The local Japanese version uses a motorcycle pacer and includes a legal betting system that does not exist in the international version of the sport.
