Matsushima-Kaigan Station, railway station in Matsushima, Miyagi district, Miyagi prefecture, Japan
Matsushima-Kaigan Station is an elevated railway station on the Senseki Line in Matsushima, a coastal town in Miyagi Prefecture. It sits within walking distance of the bay and functions as the main arrival point for visitors to the area.
The line serving this station opened in the 1920s to link the coastal towns around Matsushima with Sendai. The station suffered serious damage in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami and was restored to service after extensive repair work.
The station is staffed by a contracted operator and has both stairs and elevators to reach the elevated platforms. The main sights around the bay are within walking distance, so comfortable footwear is a good idea.
The name "Kaigan" means "coast" or "seaside" in Japanese, so the station's name literally translates to "Matsushima Coast Station," pointing travelers directly toward the water. This makes it one of the few stations in Japan whose name doubles as a direction sign.
