Port of Misaki, Maritime hub at Sadamisaki Peninsula, Japan.
Port of Misaki is a ferry port at the far western tip of the Sadamisaki Peninsula on Shikoku, where the Seto Inland Sea meets the Bungo Channel. Ferry services run from here to Saganoseki in Oita Prefecture on Kyushu, carrying both passengers and vehicles.
The Sadamisaki Peninsula was long difficult to reach by land, and the ferry crossing at Misaki became a key link between Shikoku and Kyushu. The later development of Route 197 made the peninsula more accessible and reinforced the port's role as a transit point.
Fishermen working at this port follow practices passed down through generations, supplying local markets with fresh catch. Their work shapes daily life in the area and connects the community to the sea.
The port is reached by following Route 197 along the length of the Sadamisaki Peninsula. Ferry crossings can be affected by weather, so checking conditions before setting out is a good habit.
The Sadamisaki Peninsula is the narrowest peninsula in Japan, and at its tip near Misaki the two flanking sea areas are only a short distance apart. Taking the ferry here gives a clear sense of just how thin this strip of land really is.
