Gojō Bridge, Bridge in Gion District, Kyoto, Japan
The Gojo Bridge spans the Kamo River with eight traffic lanes, connecting downtown Kyoto to the eastern districts near Kiyomizu Temple.
Originally built in 1139, the bridge underwent reconstruction in 1589 under Toyotomi Hideyoshi's command, relocating it from present-day Matsubara Bridge location.
The bridge marks the legendary first encounter between young warrior Ushiwakamaru and the monk Benkei, depicted in stone statues at its western end.
The bridge serves as part of National Routes 1 and 8, providing direct access to Kiyomizu-Gojo Station and multiple bus stops.
The bridge railings feature sixteen bronze ornamental finials, some bearing inscriptions dating back to 1645.
