Imeitei, Biographical museum in Shin'onsen, Japan
Imeitei is a biographical museum housed in a traditional Japanese residence in Shin'onsen with multiple tatami rooms, an inner courtyard, and connecting spaces. The displays contain historical objects that show how the residents lived and worked in this merchant home.
The building was originally constructed as a sake brewery and residence for the Mori family. It later received recognition as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.
The house displays the merchant traditions of northern Hyogo through furniture, calligraphy, and local artworks you can see in its rooms. You get a sense of how successful merchants lived and organized their homes during that era.
The museum is located next to a canal, making it easy to find while walking through Shin'onsen. Plan enough time to explore the various rooms, as each space reveals different aspects of the merchant household.
A preserved tamped-earth floor at the entrance shows visitors how the original entry surface looked and wore over time. This entrance reveals the everyday wear and aging that marked a working merchant residence.
