保戸野, Residential district in Akita, Japan
Hodono is a residential district in Akita situated on flat terrain along the right bank of the Asahikawa River, with the JR Ou Main Line passing through its northeastern section. The area is organized into numbered neighborhoods with a mix of houses, small shops, and tree-lined streets.
The area developed as part of the castle town surrounding Kubota Castle, with Hodono Village appearing in records from 1591 onward. It transformed from a samurai residential area in the Meiji period into the modern neighborhood seen today.
The area is home to two historic shrines, Atago and Suwa, which have served as gathering places for the community and remain focal points for local observances and celebrations.
The district is well served by the JR Ou Main Line with regular train access through its northeastern section. Most shops and services are located along main streets that are easily walkable from residential areas.
The neighborhood was formally organized in 1966 through a systematic address numbering system that became a model for modern urban administration. This early adoption of organized district numbering helped shape how residents identify with their neighborhoods today.
