Shigisan Gyokuzōin

Shigisan Gyokuzōin is a Buddhist temple and lodging facility on Mount Shigi, comprising several accommodation buildings within a large complex connected by illuminated stone pathways. The temple offers Japanese-style rooms with shared baths, traditional vegetarian meals, and direct access to prayer halls.

The temple became one of the Thirteen Buddhist Sites of Yamato and served as a spiritual learning center throughout the centuries. This status helped the site maintain its importance and continuous operation.

Guests participate in morning prayers at the Yokuyu-do hall, where the chief priest performs the Goma fire ritual following Buddhist tradition. This daily practice connects visitors to the monastery's spiritual rhythm.

The site sits on a mountainside, so comfortable walking shoes and some physical fitness are helpful when exploring the different areas. Advance reservations are important, especially if you want to participate in special activities or meditation sessions.

Visitors can participate in Asokukan meditation sessions, an esoteric Buddhist practice specific to this temple. These special sessions require advance notice and offer insight into a specialized form of Buddhist practice.
