Otaki Dam, Gravity dam in Kawakami, Japan
The Otaki Dam spans 315 meters in length and rises 100 meters high, controlling water flow in the Kii River system of Nara Prefecture.
Construction of the dam began in 1962 and required five decades to complete, finally opening its flood control operations in 2012.
The relocation of the entire Niukawa Shrine to higher ground marked a significant adjustment in local religious practices during dam construction.
The facility generates 10,500 kilowatts of hydroelectric power while supplying water to Nara Prefecture, Wakayama Prefecture, and industrial zones.
The dam features four crest gates capable of releasing 3,725 tons of water per second during emergency discharge operations.
