Đại Cốc Tự, Buddhist temple in Echizen, Japan.
Dai Coc Tu is a temple complex in the Echizen region housing a 17-meter tall indoor Buddha statue that stands as one of Japan's largest seated figures of this type. The site also features a five-story pagoda structure, various religious buildings, and a collection of numerous Buddha statues scattered across the grounds.
The temple was established in the 1980s when a local taxi company owner initiated the project to build a religious center in Fukui Prefecture. This founding shaped the site into a modern religious structure while drawing inspiration from classical Buddhist design traditions.
The temple centers its spiritual practice around the main Buddha figure, with visitors able to spend time observing the numerous smaller statues positioned throughout the grounds. The sanctuary brings together different Buddhist traditions and draws people seeking this form of religious expression and reflection.
The site is open daily and allows plenty of time to explore the various structures and statues at a relaxed pace. An elevator provides access to the observation platform on the pagoda, making the grounds accessible to visitors with different mobility levels.
The five-story pagoda here ranks as the tallest of its kind across Japan, and its elevator allows visitors to reach a vantage point that few other locations offer. From the upper level, one can see both the temple grounds below and the surrounding landscape of the Echizen region.
