Ōzan Kofun Cluster, Ancient burial mounds in Matsue, Japan.
The Ōzan Kofun Cluster is a group of ancient burial mounds located across elevated terrain in Shimane Prefecture and covers a substantial area. The site contains multiple tumuli of different sizes and shapes that visitors can explore along walking paths.
The burial mounds were built between the late 4th and mid-6th centuries, showing the burial practices of that era. Twelve of the tumuli later received designation as a National Historic Site.
The different mound shapes such as keyhole, circular, and square structures reflect how people in different periods practiced burial rituals here. Walking through the site gives a sense of the importance these places held for the communities that built them.
Access to the grounds is on foot, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended due to the hilly terrain. A visitor center provides orientation and additional information about the site.
The Kinzaki No. 1 mound stands out for its distinctive internal structure, featuring a stone chamber system built into a pit. This construction method represents an evolution in burial architecture from that period.
