Komaru Castle

Komaru Castle is an archaeological site in Echizen featuring stone ramparts, dry moats, and foundation traces positioned on a small hill. The remains show the layout of a fortified military structure with defensive features and building foundations from the 1500s.

A military fortress was built in 1575 during a period of widespread warfare and power struggles across Japan. The structure served as a regional stronghold during these conflicts.

The excavated roof tiles carry inscriptions that document a major religious conflict involving armed groups that took place in this region. These physical records show what mattered most to the people who lived here then.

The site is accessible by car from a nearby expressway exit, with about 15 minutes of driving required. Easy access from the main road makes it straightforward to find and visit.

Excavations in the 1930s uncovered earthen structures and stone foundations that led to its official protection status at that time. This early archaeological work established the site as a recognized historic location.
